DEFINITION

An Agile Coach guides teams and organisations on their journey towards agile ways of working. Unlike a traditional consultant, an Agile Coach does not prescribe solutions — they help people find their own answers and continuously improve how they work.

An Agile Coach operates across three levels: the team level (team dynamics, processes), the organisational level (structures, culture) and the personal level (mindset, attitude). The role differs clearly from a Scrum Master: while a Scrum Master protects the Scrum process within one team, an Agile Coach typically works across multiple teams and at leadership level.

CONNECTIONS

Leadership

Agile Coaches work closely with leaders to evolve their understanding of leadership, helping them let go and give teams more ownership.

Artificial Intelligence

In the context of AI transformations, Agile Coaches help introduce agile ways of working into AI teams and strengthen the connection between technical development and user needs.

Project Management

Agile Coaches help project organisations develop hybrid ways of working and manage the transition from traditional project management to agile methods.

KEY POINTS

  • Agile Coaches guide teams and organisations — they do not provide solutions.
  • They work across three levels: team, organisation, and personal.
  • Difference to Scrum Master: Agile Coaches typically work across multiple teams.
  • Coaching competence is just as important as methodological knowledge.
  • There is no unified certification standard for Agile Coaches.

EXAMPLE

A mid-sized company introduces Scrum. Teams learn the ceremonies but the mindset stays traditional. An Agile Coach accompanies the organisation for six months: coaching Scrum Masters in their role, having conversations with management about agile leadership, and facilitating cross-team retrospectives. After the engagement, teams work independently and improve continuously.

MISCONCEPTIONS

Is an Agile Coach the same as a Scrum Master?

No. A Scrum Master is a role within a single Scrum team. An Agile Coach typically works across multiple teams and at the organisational level. Both need coaching competence, but the Agile Coach has a broader sphere of impact.

Can anyone with Scrum experience become an Agile Coach?

Not automatically. Agile coaching requires not only methodological knowledge but also strong coaching competence: active listening, systems thinking, and the ability to accompany people in their learning.
